First-ever WBSC Baseball5 World Cup pushed back

The first-ever WBSC Baseball5 World Cup will now be held in June 2021 to allow more time for qualifiers to take place following the outbreak of COVID-19.

Mexico was slated to host the inaugural Baseball5 World Cup and Youth Baseball5 World Cup in December but the WBSC executive board late last week decided to postpone the event.

Coronavirus has complicated the qualification process for the two 12-team tournaments.

France, Lithuania and hosts Mexico are the only teams qualified so far for the Baseball5 World Cup.

Hosts Mexico are the only team to have qualified for the Youth Baseball5 World Cup to date.

Australia will have to qualify through Oceania, which has been granted one spot in both World Cups.

Oceania has not yet locked in details of its qualifiers.

The Youth Baseball5 World Cup is expected to double as a qualifying event to the 2022 Youth Olympic Games in Dakar, Senegal.

Baseball5 was one of two sports added to the Youth Olympics in January.

The fast-paced and youth-focused urban discipline is a five-on-five, five-inning street version of baseball softball that requiring virtually no equipment, can be played anywhere.

It was established by the WBSC in 2017.
