Expressions of interest open to host first Australian Baseball5 Championships

The first-ever Australian Baseball5 Championships will be held in July.

Baseball Australia today opened expressions of interest to host the three-day event which will be the biggest showcase of the fast-paced and youth-focused urban discipline ever held in Australia.

The tournament will feature at least mixed-gender youth (under-18) and open division with the possibility of under-13 and masters divisions being included.

Baseball Australia’s Baseball5 & Junior Engagement manager Scott Hillier said the championships provided an exciting opportunity for a non-traditional baseball venue to host.

“The play everywhere nature of Baseball5 lends itself to unique venues hosting the championships,” Hillier said.

“It opens the door for iconic tourist destinations to host Baseball5 and put on a terrific show.”

The tournaments will differ from traditional Australian baseball championships with open registration.

There will be approximately 8-12 teams in each division with eight players per team.

The 2020 Australian Baseball5 Championships will double as a selection event for this year’s Oceania Baseball5 qualifiers which lead onto the first-ever Baseball5 World Cup in Mexico during December.

Baseball5 was launched in Australia last May and has grown rapidly with each state taking part and more than 3500 students as part of the Sporting Schools program.
